Developing the ‘Women’s Health Hub’ Model

by Incisive Health for Bayer Ltd

Summary of work

The intrauterine system (IUS) and intrauterine device (IUD) provide between them highly effective methods of contraception, emergency contraception, and treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding and a component of hormone replacement therapy. But women’s access to IUS/IUD fitting services has been significantly compromised through funding cuts and fragmented commissioning.

Bayer’s women’s health team identified that some local areas were exploring how new models of primary care could address these challenges, but they were largely working in isolation.

With a view to creating a shared vision, Bayer convened a focus meeting involving four highly engaged experts. Through the meeting, participants developed the outline for a new collaborative ‘Women’s Health Hub’ model. As a result, a policy paper and sample inter-practice referral templates were agreed and widely shared.

A second, bigger meeting was then organised involving 13 experts with an interest in IUS/IUD from all perspectives, including Public Health England and the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health. Attendees were encouraged to interrogate and refine the model, which received widespread approval.

The model is already being used to inform a service redesign in Darlington. If adopted more widely, women around the country will be able to access a critical treatment in women’s healthcare.

Judges’ comments

This was a carefully sculpted entry, and the programme was interesting and engaged important stakeholders, which resulted in delivering something practical.
