Demystifying Targeted Cancer Treatments

by Cancer Research UK

Summary of work

Cancer Research UK wants to make sure that cancer research is done to the highest possible standard, and that those involved feel equipped to do so and part of the fight against cancer. We recognised an unmet need and opportunity for clinical research nurses to come together to learn and provide them with accessible, cancer education to support their delivery of cancer clinical trials.

Independent research showed the need for research nurses working on cancer trials to stay uptodate with the latest treatments. In consultation with an expert Steering Group including research nurses, Cancer Research UK developed the free ‘Demystifying Targeted Cancer Treatments’ MOOC (massive open online course) on Future Learn’s social learning platform. The course was designed to help increase understanding of targeted cancer therapies and immunotherapies, and confidence in communicating these to patients to enhance informed consent discussions.

To date, the MOOC has reached over 5,530 learners and has seen a 29% point reported increase in understanding of targeted cancer treatments and a 32% point reported increase in confidence to communicate about them. 74% of responders say the course has improved their clinical practice and 72% of responders say that the course has helped them better support patients.
