Visualise Medical Education Programme

by Rock Unlimited for Novartis

Summary of work

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is the UK’s leading cause of vision loss and is associated with ’fluid on the eye’ which is established using OCT (optical coherence tomography). The interpretation of OCT imaging can be misunderstood in practice and current training resources are ’PowerPoint images’ not representative of clinical practice.

Utilising 12 top UK medical retina specialists, Novartis and Rock Unlimited set out to improve the understanding and interpretation of OCT images, provide expert insights and consensus and develop a case study and medical image repository, that represents practical real-life examples of different clinical scenarios of patient management that can serve as a benchmark for training across the UK.

The Visualise Medical Education programme was developed in conjunction with an innovative retinal image management platform developed by Moorfields Eye Hospital. This is the first platform allowing integration of full image stacks into case studies to reflect real-world practice to educate medical retina professionals in fluid management to optimise patient care.

The inaugural Visualise meeting was a success with 90% of attendees acquiring knowledge that they felt could be applied to clinical practice as well improving their overall knowledge in addition to the implementation of the platform and technology throughout the meeting.
