David Kyne

Summary of work

David is the CEO of Evoke KYNE, an award-winning health communications agency dedicated to help improve and save lives. Following a career at several large public relations agencies in New York, David founded KYNE in 2009 (prior to its acquisition) with the vision to build a new type of agency 100% focused on health, to drive innovation in the field while being the best place to work for its employees. As CEO, he is focused on driving the strategic vision of the company around the globe, including our ongoing integration with our parent companies Evoke and Huntsworth Health, to drive key new business, shape and partner with our new executive leadership team and drive cross-company resource and capabilities management within the Evoke/Huntsworth network.

Over the course of David’s 20 plus year career, he has advised clients ranging from global non-governmental organisations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Carter Center, to biopharmaceutical companies including Johnson & Johnson, Amgen and Pfizer. Prior to founding KYNE, he led the New York Healthcare practice at the global public relations firm Hill+Knowlton Strategies.

David also serves on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Corporate Roundtable, advising CDC/CDC Foundation and private sector partners on how communications and effective partnerships can increase efficacy when responding to global health threats. David is also the co-founder of the Pandemic Action Network, a global network of organisations driving action against COVID-19 and to help the world better prepare for future pandemics.

Judges' comments

David has a significant global reach and a heartfelt engagement in public health education and intervention in the developing world. He is a principled, respected and accomplished figure, going way beyond the day job, whilst building the reputation of the industry.  Most notably recently being a founding member of the Pandemic Action Network – which was generated as a direct result of Covid 19.

“Whilst David is seen in role as a leading Health Communications and Advocacy expert, he has also played a pivotal and strategic role in creating Southern Africa’s leading Public Private Partnership for Malaria. I met David in 2009 whilst he was leading the award winning United Against Malaria campaign. David inspired us to get involved and together we built a strong private sector team showcasing malaria at the South African hosted 2010 soccer FIFA World Cup. It was very successful, and he set a foundation for future campaigns covering malaria and other diseases on the continent. David’s leadership, strategic thinking and mentorship enabled Robbie Brozin (founder of Nandos) and I to build Goodbye Malaria and create a public private partnership between the governments of Mozambique, South Africa and Eswatini (Swaziland) and The Global Fund to fight Aids, TB and Malaria, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Goodbye Malaria. The current funding by all partners is close to $30m and around 2 million people are protected from malaria in Southern Africa. David’s insights and inspiration has helped me lead the Goodbye Malaria team since inception. David’s knowledge and understanding of Africa runs deep, built from the ground up. David was equally comfortable dealing with Presidents as with a youngster suffering from malaria.” – Sherwin Charles, CEO, Goodbye Malaria

“David has always understood that healthcare is more than drugs, it is about health! And the only way to help deliver health outcomes is to connect the ecosystem in partnerships. So, he has consistently driven connections between pharma companies, between pharma and patients, between patients and governments, and between NGOs and pharma companies to the benefit of us all. These are not easy alliances to create and then sustain and many have only come about because of David's sheer tenacity and his personal integrity. In this rather jaundiced age, David's integrity and requirement that all around him do the right thing makes him an exceptional leader which his very happy band of healthcare warriors can attest to!” – Paul Taaffe, CEO, Huntsworth

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with David for more than a decade -- beginning when I was at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and we partnered to create United Against Malaria, a global coalition focused on malaria control. Over the years, I continue to be impressed by his passion and commitment to taking on the world's most pressing health issues. From malaria to Ebola, and now the COVID-19 pandemic, David believes in the power of communications as a health intervention with the ability to improve and save lives. He is a motivational, results-driven leader who isn’t afraid of big challenges and inspires others to follow in his path. And to top it off, he’s also a wonderful human being.” – Gabrielle Fitzgerald, CEO, Panorama
