Defeating Meningitis

by Meningitis Research Foundation

Summary of work

Defeating Meningitis

Meningitis remains a public health challenge around the world. It is a leading infectious cause of death in children and also affects teens and adults. The bacteria that cause the disease kill one in ten infected and leaves one in five with impairments such as deafness and limb loss.
Meningitis Research Foundation worked with leading experts to analyse the latest meningitis data and review leading health strategies and policy to identify challenges in tackling the disease. The charity discovered that meningitis was missing from critical global health strategies and not prioritised appropriately. Progress towards defeating it lagged behind other vaccine-preventable diseases: measles and tetanus saw global deaths in children under five fall by 87 and 93% respectively between 1990-2017, while meningitis deaths dropped by just 53%.
By engaging global health experts and decision-makers, using evidence, coalitions and amplified patient voice, Meningitis Research Foundation drove a call to action and provided a platform for those affected to have a voice. Persistent, targeted campaigning efforts and convening of expertise, saw the first-ever global plan to defeat meningitis created by the World Health Organization, and the world's first resolution on meningitis approved by the World Health Assembly.

Judges' comments

Defeating Meningitis had a clear focus on decision makers with very positive outcomes. They really understood who they needed to target to make a change and it was fantastic that they ended up getting WHO on board. Meningitis Research Foundation had real clarity from beginning to end, very clear on what needed to be done and how to do it. Plus focused on who the decision makers were.  They did an incredible amount of work.  This is a winner.
