Helping Head and Neck cancer survivors overcome barriers to employment

by Aurora Healthcare Communications for Bristol Myers Squibb

Summary of work

Head and Neck cancer and its treatment can have life-changing consequences for patients’ appearance and ability to communicate, as well as mental health. As the only group of cancers that are exclusively ‘above the collar’, its effects are highly visible. That’s why Bristol Myers Squibb partnered with key patient groups and charities related to Head and Neck cancer and going back-to-work.
Through robust research and true partnership, the needs of patients were clearly defined. They wanted something to address a specific need – returning-to-work. The strategic smartness of this topic was that the support and guidance needed to help people overcome employment barriers would also address their broader mental health and quality of life needs.
By developing a Back-to-Work Guide in partnership with people who have directly experienced, and overcome, the challenges of Head and Neck cancer, we created a patient-centred resource that will have a major impact on patients’ lives. The category calls for healthcare partnerships; this couldn't have been written without it.
And as the world continues to be dominated by COVID-19, the need to support people with physical and communication challenges to navigate the new home-working environment has become more important than ever.

Judges' comments

This programme was very effective within the scope of the budget for its impressive outcomes and co-creation element. It was a great example of how to create a strategy based on insights and a operate a successful three-way partnership when that need was identified by insights. We look forward to seeing this project develop.
