Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP): Recognition, Treatment and Hope
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an extremely rare and disabling genetic condition in which skeletal muscle and connective tissue, such as tendons and ligaments, are gradually replaced by bone. Quality of life is severely and progressively impacted in affected individuals. It is often misdiagnosed and mismanaged due to a lack of awareness of clinical signs and symptoms, yet an accurate diagnosis as early as possible in life is crucial to avoid harmful progression of the disease.
To raise awareness of FOP among global physicians, Springer Healthcare IME worked alongside international experts to design and launch a disease awareness website called ’*FOP: Recognition, Treatment and Hope*’. The goal was to increase the availability of high-quality educational content on FOP, to improve diagnostic competency and accuracy, and to become a trusted resource for all those who manage patients with FOP.
Our website has attracted a global audience of almost 3,400 HCPs, with ~1358 actively participating in educational content. Learners have reported improvements in knowledge and confidence in accurately diagnosing and appropriately managing FOP. Given the rarity of the condition, we believe this engagement will help shine a light on this little-known and debilitating condition.
The fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive (FOP): Recognition, Treatment and Hope programme impressed the judges with their thorough, multidisciplinary and multichannel approach driven by a clear, insight-driven strategy. They achieved remarkable results and truly global engagement that achieved their aim to raise awareness of such a rare and devastating disease. A worthy winner.
