A Pharmacist Training Programme for Desogestrel POM to P

by Hamell Communications Ltd for HRA Pharma

Summary of work

Hana® (desogestrel), a progestogen-only oral contraceptive pill (POP), was successfully reclassified from prescription-only to pharmacy (POMt-P) status in the UK in 2021. Hamell worked with HRA Pharma on its pharmacy launch campaign, including a comprehensive suite of training materials developed to ensure pharmacists can supply Hana confidently and appropriately. These materials were included in the submission package to the MHRA supporting the switch.

To understand pharmacists’ current knowledge and attitudes towards POPs, Hamell conducted interviews with clinical specialists, GPs and pharmacy leaders, to identify any potential barriers surrounding the in-pharmacy handling of Hana.

Building on these insights and using Hamell’s self-funded behavioural research exploring pharmacists’ engagement with switched products, we provided important information about Hana, addressing knowledge gaps for different types of pharmacists: from large chains to independents, and from those well versed in POPs, through to those with limited experience of providing contraceptive services.

Interactivity, clarity and knowledge retention were key in the creation of this training programme. Content is presented in bite-sized chunks, with infographics and videos following principles of behavioural design to spark engagement.

The training is accredited by the National Pharmacy Association and a CPD certificate is available to download following successful completion of the training.

Judges’ comments

This was a very comprehensive entry, with a clear objective. The target audience needs were thoroughly considered and used to develop a straightforward but very effective programme. The programme outcomes blew the judges away with the wide reach over a short space of time. Well done to the team who developed this!
