Transforming Education Across LMICs: Reaching >900k HCPs

by MedShr

Summary of work

While recent years have seen huge advances in healthcare and patient outcomes, major disparities in health systems continue to affect populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) such as those in sub-Saharan Africa.

These disparities can be seen in a number of major global health focus areas; for example, the WHO estimates 227 million cases of malaria worldwide in 2019, with the African region accounting for over 90% of global cases and deaths, with children under five accounting for the majority of cases.

MedShr’s proprietary polling and data of HCP members also demonstrates that, despite high internet connectivity, significant knowledge gaps are associated with these areas, with only 37% of HCPs correctly identifying treatment for paediatric patients with severe malaria.

To help address these disparities, MedShr sought funding from Novartis to deliver tailored, accessible and short-form education via our mobile-first platform.

The programme was aligned with areas of unmet need across malaria, sickle cell disease (SCD), antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Chagas, leprosy and ophthalmology, and targeted at low- and middle-income countries.

Our transformational approach has engaged over 900,000 HCPs, with impact assessments showing 79% of participants felt more clinically confident following the education.

Judges’ comments

This robust and successful entry from MedShr impressed the the judges. It was a very admirable project, with a focus on LMIC, along with specific areas of need relevant to those countries. Clearly defined objectives, strategy and implementation, with a clear over achievement on objectives
