Transforming specialised commissioning for patients with rare and complex conditions

by Specialised Healthcare Alliance

Summary of work

The hundreds of thousands of people who need treatment for rare and complex conditions at any time face a brighter future. Conditions, including rarer cancers, cystic fibrosis, neurological conditions, spinal injury, severe burns and many services for children, have a record of inconsistent provision and frequently poor outcomes.

A successful campaign to transform specialised commissioning has seen responsibility and £10bn budget exclusively vested in the NHS Commissioning Board. For the first time, this paves the way for consistent standards of access and care for patients across England, supported by the first national framework for ethical decision-making.

Judges’ comments

Quiet, consistent and tenacious, this campaign engendered trust and showed very strong outcomes.
