The SHE Medical Education Programme

by Darwin Healthcare Communications for Bristol-Myers Squibb

Summary of work

The number of women in Europe living with HIV is rising, but data and resources to support the care of this population are lacking.

To address this, a committee of healthcare professionals, women living with HIV and policymakers was brought together to design SHE, an innovative and integrated medical education and peer support programme, to improve the care and quality of life of women living with HIV in Europe by educating physicians and empowering patients.

SHE medical education (Strong, HIV positive women, Educational programme) provides physicians with a framework for action and tools to improve their clinical practice.

Judges’ comments

I liked the fact that almost all HIV programmes are targeted at gays and there is very little on the issues that women face, which this programme addresses. Only one in five drug trials have women as an audience so there is clearly a real need. The results were good and I loved the ambition involved in bringing this to the fore: they achieved an extraordinary amount in just one year across such a broad range.
