Innovative digital solutions address unmet needs for people living with ADHD

by Janssen with support from Aurora

Summary of work

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common behavioural disorder in the UK. Janssen and Aurora worked with ADHD experts to identify two unmet needs faced by people living with, or caring for someone with the condition. Parents of children with ADHD needed help to get the most out of consultations with their child’s doctor; older children and young adults needed help with organisation and prioritisation of daily tasks. Research underpinned the decision to choose mobile app technology as the most appropriate channel for reaching both groups. How’s today been? and Sorted: The daily organiser are two apps that directly address the needs of these specific groups. Experts in both ADHD and motivational design were engaged to ensure the right balance between the functional and motivational aspects of the apps, given the limited attention span of people with the condition. Both apps used creativity and innovation to great effect and both exceeded their usage targets. Clinicians, people living with ADHD and patient groups have recognised these apps as making a unique and important contribution to the ADHD community by helping to change behaviours and improve patient outcomes.

Judges comments

This is a simple app that is fit-for-purpose and has been embraced by HCPs and patients alike. It was well executed and enabled data to be assimilated and used in HCP discussions. The initiative focused the reasons for non-compliance to the treatment regimen while providing holistic support - based on specific behavioural insights - for children undergoing treatment for ADHD.
