‘Don’t Wait To Anticoagulate’: Joint Working Supporting Patients to Optimise the Management of Atrial Fibrillation (AF)-Related Stroke Prevention in Primary and Secondary Care

By: Bayer and the West of England Academic Health Science Network

Summary of work

The National Health Service today faces a huge challenge - caring for patients with dwindling resources. Finding new and innovative solutions is supported by the drive to form Joint Working partnerships with industry which enable access to the business knowledge and insights accrued by industry experts who can then share their insight with their NHS collaborators.

In the UK, Bayer’s innovative partnership with the West of England Academic Health Science Network (West of England AHSN) has been held up as an example of best practice. Since its inception, the West of England AHSN has been working with Bayer on the ‘Don’t Wait to Anticoagulate’ (DWAC) project, ensuring that patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) at risk of stroke are properly anticoagulated in line with NICE atrial fibrillation guidance (GG180). Effectively the project is helping to facilitate a shift in the way atrial fibrillation is managed in primary care.

The aim of the project is to optimally anticoagulate patients with AF to reduce the risk of a stroke with an aspiration to save 200 strokes across the West of England. The DWAC project has already been adopted by one CCG in Phase II as planned and one more CCG in Phase III locally. Subsequently, due to the success of the project, there is a now a national adoption and spread plan through other AHSNs across the country.

Judges' comments

This is a fantastic initiative with a complex group of stakeholders. It encompassed the identification of clinical need, thorough evaluation, a pilot study which proved the concept and true NHS/industry collaboration. The resulting patient outcomes were extremely impressive and  the project has been taken up nationally by the NHS, which speaks volumes.
