Company overview - Abbott

Abbott was thrilled to win this Award last year, when the judges described them as "An exemplary demonstration of pharma 'Turning Science into Caring'." The UK affiliate of the global, broad-based healthcare company, Abbott UK is still making excellent growth, despite a declining market. In 2009 it acquired Solvay and produced a healthy growth year on year, with in particular, Humira sales up 33 per cent that year. Voted fifth in the 2009/10 Pharmaceutical Field (Pf) Employer of Choice and 10th in the 2010 UK's 50 Best Places to Work and ranked the World's Most Admired Company in the Pharmaceutical Industry in Fortune magazine's annual listing – they have set their sights for the future on being number one healthcare company, best supplier, best neighbour… and best employer.

Judges' comments

"Theirs is a road map to drive excellence and continue success over the next five years through capability development and a good cultural mindset. Theirs is also an environment renowned for nurturing innovation through 'insight, ideas and impact'."

Company overview - sanofi-aventis

In 2009 sanofi-aventis were facing an acute challenge due to declining R&D, increasing competition, decreasing success of their commercial model and rising costs. With acquisitions made in the last two years to strengthen their core brands in cancer and diabetes, sanofi-aventis have clearly prioritised outcomes – for the business, customer and patient – in their business philosophy. They handled structural changes in a very impressive way, displaying excellent management of their employees while reducing the organisation by 30 per cent.

Judges' comments

"'Collaboration', 'advocacy' … the new sanofi-aventis philosophy – pioneered in the UK – encompasses the best in pharma/healthcare initiatives and accountability. It is clear that they have changed the way they think about marketing and developed excellent local level understanding."
