Digital: Everyone has to keep learning

In a guest blog, Faisal Ahmed says that when it comes to digital we all have to learn and keep on learning

My first boss on my second day at work gave me Philip Kotler's book on marketing. I'd just finished university and thought that I didn't have to sit there and read text books again.

The following week he kept asking me questions about the book and the next month he gave me another book, even though he wasn't my boss anymore. This went on for a year until he left to run and eBay Europe.

What he instilled in me was we have to learn and keep on learning. My next boss kept on saying that the internet is still on day one and we're learning everyday; he's still saying that 14 years later, after building one of the biggest e-commerce stores and being worth $28bn.

Since joining the pharma industry the key thing I keep hearing is that education in digital can only lead to creating better digital experiences for patients and healthcare professionals.

That's led us to create Velocity healthcare conference where you can learn from the likes of Pfizer, GSK, Novartis and many more pharma companies.

There will also be key people from outside our industry along with learning from people outside our industry like Tom Hulme voted by Wired magazine as one of the most influential people in digital and Lee Henshaw who set up the first on-line PR company in Europe having sold that for millions he's moved onto launching an online advertising company working on changing the industry from boring banners to amazing experiences.

How did Velocity come about? The Digitally Sick team basically sat and said that conventional pharma conferences aren't educating enough. So we spoke to many people about this and listened on Twitter during other events, and if you were to do a word cloud from these what you would learn is that the Wi-Fi didn't work.

Our ambition for Velocity isn't for the Wi-Fi to work. We would almost want it not to work*, because we want the audience to be busy taking notes and learning about 10 new things they can do within industry guidelines to improve their digital capabilities.

We want you to learn from people like Dirijuan Sabesan, who at the age of 15 set up his first digital agency and then went on to star as a mentor on the recent BBC Three programme Be Your Own Boss with Innocent drinks founder Richard Reed. Dirijuan helped UK online youth broadcaster SBTV and Jamal Edwards transform from a bedroom operation into a company worth £6m. Along the way it also became one of the most watched video channels on YouTube and one of the most liked and followed music brands in the UK on Facebook and Twitter.

We want you to learn from Adobe who have weathered Steve Jobs banning flash on Apple devices, to one of the biggest players in social media. With iPad detailing aids starting on an Adobe product, you'll learn a lot more from about you can improve iPad detailing as well as some new ideas on how to analyse data.

If social is on your agenda we hope you will also learn from Maz Nadjm, on how he helped Sky, the BBC, the Times, Cancer Research, Cisco, NHS and the UK government to be more social whilst he himself was ranked by Forbes as one of its top 50 social media leaders.

Along with Google, Qubit and many more you'll learn so much about digital in one day than attending 100 Pharma digital conferences and hopefully you won't have time to talk about Wi-Fi*.
