MHRA launches medicines regulation blog as Brexit looms

MedRegs will provides insight into its latest regulatory thinking

Digital pharmaThe UK's medicines regulator has launched a new blog as it prepares for a role that is likely to be considerable enlarged once the country leaves the European Union.

Last month health secretary Jeremy Hunt told MPs that after Brexit he did not expect the UK to remain within the European Medicines Agency, although pharma is lobbying for the UK to retain ties with that body.

As the Brexit negotiations loom the MHRA said its blog would provides insight into its latest regulatory thinking, including "the inside track on emerging issues for the regulation of medicines".

Dr Siu Ping Lam, director of licensing, MHRA said: "Our MedRegs blog is another opportunity for us to connect directly with our stakeholders and customers in a less formal way, help them avoid common and easily avoidable errors and engage with us on issues that are important to them.

"It also offers them an opportunity to share their thoughts and comments with us, and will encourage further two-way conversation between our regulatory specialists at MHRA and those working across industry, academia and healthcare."

Topics covered will also include submissions and how to get them right first time and a behind-the-scenes look at how the regulator works. MedRegs is not the regulator's first blog, however, and follows the MHRA Inspectorate blog that was launched in June 2015.

Meanwhile, the MHRA's US counterpart the Food and Drug Administration has been running its FDA Voice blog since December 2011, with the site evolving into a core channel for its communications.
