Pharmaceutical Market Europe - March 2020

PME March

As the world remains gripped by the outbreak of coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, pharma companies are intensifying their research efforts to discover both a treatment and a vaccine. After trials began in China in February evaluating the efficacy of Gilead’s experimental antiviral  drug remdesivir against the virus, the National Institutes of Health has now initiated testing of the drug in the US.

In the race to develop a vaccine, a number of pharma companies are advancing their respective candidates. In the US, biotech company Moderna’s vaccine for human use has been sent to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) to be used in a planned phase 1 study in that country. GSK has partnered with China-based biotech company Clover Biopharmaceuticals on its protein-based coronavirus vaccine candidate, COVID-19 S-Trimer. Sanofi and Johnson & Johnson, in collaboration with the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), are also developing vaccine candidates against COVID-19. Read our article on page 10 for more.

In our cover story, Chris Ross looks at the seven steps needed to close the gap between rhetoric and reality in patient-centricity, and why it’s vital to include patient-centricity in every step. As Chris says: “Putting patients at the centre of care is easy to say but far harder to deliver. As technology continues to reshape customer experiences, pharma needs to find new ways of engaging end-users to ensure its products and services match consumer needs and expectations.” Read his article on page 32 to see why it’s time to mind the gap.

In our second feature on page 24 in the series 20 for 2020, Phil Taylor looks at five individuals who we think will have a key role to play in the sector in 2020 and beyond. Our list includes people who have shouldered new challenges, are architects of bold strategic moves and scientific developments, or who are uniquely placed to influence the pharma sector in the coming years. I hope you enjoy this issue!
