Astellas appoints ethics and compliance and US legal leaders

Mark Wanda, Nahrin Marino and Matt Silversten take up new roles

Astellas Mark WandaAstellas has promoted Mark Wanda, Nahrin Marino and Matt Silversten in its ethics and compliance and US legal departments, respectively.

Wanda (pictured) now takes on the role of executive director, anti-bribery and anti-corruption in the Japanese firm’s ethics and compliance organisation, reporting to Catherine Wertjec, SVP ethics and compliance.

Wanda brings over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, having held senior leadership positions at Schering-Plough and Sepracor Inc, a US-based biopharmaceutical company.

Prior to joining Astellas as deputy general counsel and head of its US legal regulatory team, Wanda served as SVP legal affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary at Sunovion Pharmaceuticals between 2010 and 2012.

Wertjec said: “Working with the highest sense of integrity and ethics is a cornerstone of our business.

“We have the utmost confidence that Mark’s skills and experience will enable us to continue to further Astellas’ standard for global compliance.”

Meanwhile, Nahrin Marino and Matt Silversten have been promoted to deputy general counsels, with Marino succeeding Wanda as head of Astellas US legal regulatory and Silverten becoming head of Astellas US litigation and risk management.

Marino joined Astellas in 2010 as senior corporate counsel, specialising in regulatory law. Most recently, she served as associate general counsel, focusing on regulatory, life cycle management, drug quality and manufacturing.

Joining from US law practice Jones Day in 2011, Silversten served as senior counsel litigation before promotion to assistant general counsel in 2012. Most recently, Silversten served as associate general counsel where he was responsible for litigation and dispute resolution.

Catherine Levitt, vice president, legal, said: “Nahrin and Matt have been instrumental to the growth of our Legal department in the Americas region over the past five years.

“Their collective experience enhances Astellas’ response to diverse legal issues.”
