The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has appointed its first female president with the election of Dr Carmen Peña, effective September 5.

Dr Peña, a community pharmacist from Spain, will take over from Dr Michel Buchmann who leaves after serving a four-year term at FIP, the global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists.

Dr Peña, who is president of the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain, has been associated with FIP for more than 20 years and has spent the past six years serving as vice president.

Upon assuming her position one of Dr Peña’s main goals is to enhance the education efforts of FIP to meet the needs of society and the pharmaceutical workforce.

She also commented that pharmacists should play a greater role in shaping healthcare policies on a national level and that FIP can help support national pharmacy bodies to do so.
