AstraZeneca has appointed Kirsten Zapotok as the new head of learning and development for the UK marketing arm

AstraZeneca has appointed Kirsten Zapotok as the new head of learning and development for the UK marketing arm. She worked formerly, for four years, as an HR brand partner at the company's US headquarters in Delaware, before moving to the UK in 2005 as part of a two-year placement to become an HR business partner for sales and marketing. A year's extension sees her take on responsibility in her new role for the training and development of 1,600 employees at AstraZeneca UK.

Baxter Healthcare has hired Seema Sondhi as director for health outcomes, Europe. She joins from GlaxoSmithKline where she served most recently as director in the European Health Outcomes group. Baxter has also appointed Warwick Vaughan as business unit director, renal division. Warwick joined the company in 2003 as national sales director for the renal division and has served since 2005 as the firm's UK sales and marketing director.

Plant extract-focused pharma company Phytopharm has appointed Dr Robin Blower, a former director of new neuroscience products at SmithKline Beecham, as a non-executive board director.

Dr Peter Fellner will become the new chairman of biotech company Acambis from October 1, when he will officially succeed incumbent chairman Alan Smith. Dr Fellner joined Acambis' board as a non-executive director in February 2006, having served as CEO at Celltech from 1990 to 2003 and chairman from 2003 until its acquisition by UCB. He is also a member of the UK Medical Research Council.

Meetings and events organiser the adOration group has appointed Ken Carter as its new commercial director. Ken, who has nearly 15 years' event management experience and has spent time developing such a division at Novartis over the last six years, will have particular responsibility for developing further the company's Travel & Events division.

Athena Medical PR has announced the appointment of Laura Anderson as head of media. Before taking a sabbatical last year, Laura served the company for four years formerly in account management. Reporting directly to MD Cherry Wood, Laura is the central point for media relations across the agency's client portfolio.

ScopeMedical has made two promotions: having joined in 2004 and made a significant contribution in the editorial department, Keely Jennings becomes senior editor. James Tinker becomes account executive and will continue to work on access programmes, communication strategy and event management.

Chandler Chicco Agency (CCA) has hired Fiona Hall as MD of European operations, and Neil McGregor-Paterson as MD of CCA London. Fiona, who served formerly as European MD of Weber Shandwick's healthcare practice, is responsible for expanding CCA's European affiliate network, establishing wholly-owned offices in Europe and developing pan-European business. Neil, formerly European strategic planning director at Weber Shandwick, will be responsible for leading staff and clients in the UK.

Paling Walters has promoted Ian Busby to the position of managing director, a role he moves into after a three-year stint as the agency's client services director. He has been with the company for 10 years and in his new capacity will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of all departments, reporting directly to Michael Paling who becomes chief executive and remains as chairman.


Core-Create has appointed Peter King as senior copywriter in the London office. He has more than 15 years' experience of healthcare advertising and has worked at several leading London agencies.

Tony Dutta has been hired as operations director at named-patient specialist organisation, IDIS. Previously head of supply chain at Schering-Plough UK, he will be responsible at IDIS for product procurement and management of the internal operations and pharmaceutical services teams. Tony is a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.

Cegedim UK has made several new appointments: Louis Beech has become an account manager. He started his career as a commercial sales executive for Wolfram Research. Vicky Shelton joins from Leo Pharma to be the company's new training and helpdesk manager. She will be responsible for the training requirements of Cegedim's customers in the UK and Ireland, as well as in charge of developing and co-ordinating the firm's e-learning programme. Eva Homolyov· is systems configuration specialist and will play a key part in territory re-alignment. Eva joins from Cegedim s.r.o in the Czech Republic.

Recruitment agency Chase has promoted Kelly Unsworth to the position of recruitment consultant covering south and southwest Wales and Oxon/Beds/Bucks. Kelly joined Chase in 2005 as a UK graduate recruiter.

Zenopa has appointed James Hitchman as executive recruiter. He has been with the company since 2003 focusing on recruiting sales personnel into pharma firms. He will manage all of the pharma sales management and marketing positions at Zenopa.

Huw Nicholas has joined the board of directors at Star Medical where he becomes operations director. He has more than 16 years' experience of specialist recruitment in the sector.

Royce, part of Quintiles Transnational and sister company of Innovex UK, has appointed Paul Whitehouse to be national account manager. He has more than 25 years' experience of pharmaceutical business and has held various roles from sales manager to regional manager. Paul will focus on supporting the recruitment needs of specific customers.

Specialist digital healthcare agency, Big Pink, has relocated to Windsor and hired Christine Smith who joins from RFA Advertising to be senior account manager, and Niraj Kriplani as web developer.

Winner of the CommuniquÈ Consultancy of the Year 2006 award, Virgo Health PR has hired two new recruits and announced two promotions: Natasha Gifford, who joined the firm in 2005, is promoted to account executive. She works on both ethical and consumer campaigns. Emily Brooks, also a 2005 recruit, is promoted to the role of senior account manager. She works on local markets in Europe, South Asia and Latin America. Ed Purkis has joined the firm as junior account executive. He was previously a social tutor for the charity Sense. Abby Brindley also joins as a junior account executive, after completing her language studies at the Universitat de ValÈncia.

The Pharmaceutical Marketing Society has appointed Larry Grant into the new role of membership services - development director. His aim is to raise the profile of the society among existing members and attract a broader spectrum of new members. Two new members joining the society's committee are Steve Clark and Alan Naismith. Steve has worked in pharma since 1987 and currently serves as director of SC Marketing Consultancy Ltd. Alan, who joined the pharma industry in 1990, has worked previously as a GP rep, hospital specialist, marketer and business unit manager. He now works as a consultant for Intermedia.

Munro & Forster (M&F) has made four new appointments and five promotions across its healthcare practice: Helen Munro joins the firm from the Whitehouse Consultancy to lead the political and stakeholder counsel business practice. She joins a team of three. Also new to M&F are Manmeet Sohal and Rawaa Abdalla, who join, respectively, as trainee account executive and senior account executive. Helen Gough is a new account manager who served formerly at Packer Forbes. Fiona Cheetham and Charlotte Frost are promoted to senior account directors, while Simon Grist becomes account director and Ziela Haider and Dima Iftaiha are promoted to senior account executives.
