AstraZeneca has appointed James Read as global brand PR director, Seroquel, within the new Global Marketing and Business Development organisation based in Wilmington

AstraZeneca has appointed James Read as global brand PR director, Seroquel, within the new Global Marketing and Business Development (GMBD) organisation based in Wilmington, Delaware in the US. GMBD further focuses on the company's global marketing on key brands, while the growing base in the US continues to build ever-greater customer focus. At AstraZeneca UK, James worked on both cardiovascular and company communications, as brand communications manager. ìAstraZeneca provides great professional development and commercial experience,î said James.

Natalie Douglas, former sales and marketing director of named-patient supply specialists, IDIS, has taken over as managing director of the company following a successful management buyout.

In addition to providing support to the pharmaceutical industry in managing access to pre-launch drugs, the company also establishes pharmacovigilance procedures to meet multi-market supply needs.

Dendrite International has appointed Joseph Ripp as president and chief operating officer. Joseph joins the firm from Time Warner's media and communications group where he was senior vice president. He replaces Paul Zaffaroni who has retired after five years at the company.

Michael Cann has been promoted to head of sales at Alpharma's UK generics business. Michael has extensive experience in a number of senior roles within both branded and generic drug firms, working at Napp Pharmaceuticals and Schwarz Pharma.

Medicom Group has promoted Martin Ellis to chairman. He will remain as managing director at the agency and continue to have a hands-on, client-facing role. Martin has worked in PR and communications in the pharma industry for over 16 years. He has been at Medicom since 2002 and replaces outgoing chairman, Stephen Townsend.

John Flynn has been appointed chairman of the Communication, Advertising and Marketing Education Foundation. John is currently vice chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and will replace Collin Lloyd.

Simon Rivers has been hired by Succinct Communications as scientific director. He is one of the leading oncology pharmacists in the UK having recently been the lead cancer network pharmacist for SE London Cancer Network and principal pharmacist of oncology and haematology at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

Edelman has appointed Neil McCallum-Deighton as director of UK bioscience. Neil has 14 years' experience in medical communications, including opinion leader management, brand strategy development and strategic publications planning. He has worked in global, European and UK medical education agencies, most recently at Mudskipper. Edelman has also hired Dr Andrew Fitton as an account director in its bioscience communications team. He will be responsible for developing strategic publication programmes for pharma clients. He has 18 years' experience of healthcare communications. Andrew joins the agency from Adis International where he was a senior medical writer, in New Zealand and the UK.

Axon Communications has appointed Jo Filshie as director. Jo joins from Burson-Marsteller, Australia, where she was head of healthcare. Prior to moving to Sydney, she held a number of communications roles within GSK, Europe and UK.

Alisha Parr has joined Chandler Chicco Agency to head up global and UK UCB accounts. She comes from Packer Forbes where she was an associate director for three years. Alisha has 10 years' healthcare communications experience. She worked on national, global and pan-European programmes, specialising in dermatology, prostate cancer, BPH, HRT and cardiology.

SantÈ Communications has hired Jennifer Marsden as its new graduate trainee. Jennifer joins the agency with a BSc in biological sciences from Warwick University.


Ware Anthony Rust has appointed Lulu Winter to head up its healthcare division. Lulu has over 15 years' healthcare marketing and communications experience. Previously, she has created consumer, professional and trade programmes for a number of blue chip companies including J&J, Pfizer, Novartis and Roche.

Claire Snook has joined Packer Forbes as an account executive. Claire joins the agency after freelancing as a newspaper and radio journalist for the last year. She gained her healthcare experience from working at the Bristol Evening Post, where she was deputy health reporter for nearly three years.

Shire Health London has appointed Charlotte James and Vicki Norgan as programme managers. Charlotte joins from Breakthru Breast Cancer where she was a PR manager. She will be responsible for key UK and global accounts including, Nicorette, Pantoprazole and a new cancer initiative with the ABPI, CancerBACUP and Ask About Medicines. Vicki joins from Virgo Health PR and will be managing the Nicorette and Celebrex accounts.

Shire Health International has made two senior hires at its London and New York offices. Naomi Mermod is returning to the London office to take up her new role as client services director, having spent the last three years as managing director of the New York office. Dr Nicky Cardoe will be replacing Naomi as managing director. Nicky has 12 years' experience of healthcare PR having worked within pharma, and with charities and government.

Helen Smith has been hired as director of knowledge management at Interlace Global Communications. She will be responsible for training workshops and distance learning courses for the healthcare and allied industries.

The Harten Group has hired Dr Roger Anderson as recruitment manager. In his new role, Roger will be responsible for the permanent recruitment division. He joins from Talentmark and has worked previously as a senior consultant in the pharma and healthcare sector group of MSL Search and Selection.

World Event Management has hired Mark Saxby as its new director of sales and marketing. Mark began his career in advertising, spending 10 years at Saatchi & Saatchi before joining Poulter Group, where he was group director.

Solaris has hired Joanne Taylor as account director. Joanne joins from Ogilvy Heathworld where she worked in both global and national accounts for several pharma clients, including ConvaTec, Roche and BMS.

ScopeMedical has made three new appointments: Neil Madden as director of client services, Daniel Gibbs as an account manager and James Tinker as a project coordinator. Neil joins from an international medical education agency, rising to director level during his 10-year tenure. He has years of senior agency experience with global launch programmes and client services management systems. Daniel joins the firm with five years' experience as an account handler working in global pharma communications. James joins having completed a degree in industrial economics.

It is with deep regret we announce the sudden death in September of Andy Stevens who was general manager of Jango Communications and one of the founding directors of the firm, established in 2001. The shock of his untimely death was felt, not only by his immediate work colleagues, but by current and former clients and co-workers who sent many moving tributes. Andy's career in the industry spanned 30 years, during which time he worked for Lilly, Glaxo and Pfizer in marketing and strategic planning roles. He then moved into the agency sector, specialising in medical education where he worked for The Medicine Group, Churchill Communications and CBC Oxford, before setting up Jango.
