Werner Cautreels has been appointed chief executive officer of Solvay Pharmaceuticals commencing in January 2005. He joined the company in 1997 as global head of research and development

Werner Cautreels has been appointed chief executive officer of Solvay Pharmaceuticals commencing in January 2005. He joined the company in 1997 as global head of research and development. Prior to this, Belgian-born Werner worked for Sanofi, Sterling Winthrop and Nycomed Amersham in France and the United States before returning to Europe.

Cancer Research UK has appointed Maxine Taylor as executive director of policy and communications. Currently a board director at Eli Lilly in the UK, she has led corporate affairs for Lilly since January 2000.

Synovate Healthcare has appointed Laurie Harris as vice president, corporate development and Jacquelyn Ilacqua as head of the global tandem oncology monitor.  

Oxford Immunotec has appointed Stuart Rose as global marketing director. Stuart brings 20 years' marketing and sales experience in the international pharmaceutical industry, from blue chip to start-up. Most recently, he was principal of pharmaSMART Consulting. Prior to this he was senior director, international brand marketing at Elan. He has served as chair of the HCA and as a judge for the Pharmaceutical Marketing Communiqué Awards.

Merck KGaA has appointed Peter Shotter as the new head of the consumer health care (CHC) division. Peter joined Merck three years ago as managing director of Seven Seas in the UK. He has considerable experience in consumer healthcare, having previously held a number of management positions with Boots the Chemists, where he served as director of healthcare businesses and director of stores. In his new role, Peter is a member of the Pharma Management Board.

Skillframe Executive has appointed Candace Gaisford as executive consultant. She joins with experience both in public relations and medical education having previously worked for Shire Health London and TMG Communications.

Shire Health London has announced that Ali Wright, formerly global oncology PR manager for AstraZeneca, has joined as associate director. She brings 12 years' experience in ethical pharmaceuticals and will be heading up accounts for Merck Sharpe & Dohme, and Roche, as well as driving new business initiatives. Ali has worked previously across a number of different therapy areas, including gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiology and oncology.

MJL Advertising has appointed Julia Lewis as account manager. Julia brings with her 5 years of valuable pharmaceutical experience, having worked previously with Hourglass Pictures, Sudler & Hennessey and Choice Medical Communications.


Ashok Bhat has been appointed by Phase Forward as director of commercial operations, international. Ashok will be responsible for over-seeing major client accounts, international marketing, and business development. He joins from Celltech where he was director of biometrics.  

Emma O'Callaghan has been promoted to the position of account manager at hsdcommunications. Emma will continue to work across the company's business, managing the Welch Allyn account and supporting the team on the Reckitt Benckiser account. Emma will also continue to manage sister company hsdlifestyles' largest client, Charnos Hosiery.

Big Blue Communications has appointed Rupert Whitehead as client services director - Rx, to head up the ethical division of the agency. Rupert brings with him over eight years of global and UK healthcare advertising and branding experience. He joins from PBC where he headed up brand strategy in a number of therapeutic areas including CNS, oncology, virology and microbiology.

GfK Martin Hamblin has promoted Martine Leroy-Sharman to general manager of the UK-based global healthcare office, taking full responsibility for managing the business and team. Stephen Grundy, group general manager, will now move into directing his full attention to building the company's healthcare business at an international level, developing and managing strategic healthcare accounts.

There have also been two other recent senior appointments: Saeed Mumtaz, joins as divisional director from Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Mike Mallinson has joined the company to establish a payer, pricing, reimbursement and market access practice within the global healthcare division.

Medicom Group has appointed Suzanne Edwards as senior account executive and Greg McConaghie as account manager. Suzanne joins with three years' medical education experience. Greg began his career in medical publishing before moving into communications account management. He joins from a leading pharma company.

Saatchi & Saatchi Healthcare London has made several new appointments: Philippa Beazley and Dr Nick Lamb have joined the agency as copywriters. They both bring significant experience in medical writing and served most recently at Sudler & Hennessey in London. Fabio de Bortoli joins the company as studio manager having recently worked at Matthew Poppy Ogilvy. Fabio is also trained as an IT systems analyst.

Peter Hudspeth has been promoted to associate director at Lane, Earl & Cox Advertising. He has been with the company for four years using his wealth of experience in animal health. Kim Hughes has been promoted to deputy creative director. She has been with the agency for 11 years and has art directed many client brands. Beci Martin has been promoted to senior account manager, following four years with the agency working on several launches. Julie Barton has joined as account manager. She brings with her experience of leading brands.

WestawayGillis has made four new appointments: Dr Darren Poinasamy, Dr David Hartley and Paula Baxter join the agency's management consultant development programmeas research associates; and Clare Bingham joins the client support services department as an assistant project manager.

Prior to joining WestawayGillis, Dr Poinasamy worked at Chiltern International as a business development executive. Dr Hartley has worked as a research associate in the psychopharmacology research unit at Guy's Hospital and has presented his work nationally and internationally at scientific meetings.

Paula worked previously for the NHS as a performance information analyst for over three years. During this time, she was responsible for designing and developing analytical reports regarding waiting lists, activity and performance against targets.

Clare has worked in client services and project management in industry, providing translation services and products for blue chip firms. She brings a wealth of management and administrative skills.
