John Beighton has been confirmed as managing director of enlarged Teva UK following the completion of the acquisition of generics rival Ivax at the end of January

John Beighton has been confirmed as managing director of enlarged Teva UK following the completion of the acquisition of generics rival Ivax at the end of January. John joined the firm in 1997 and held several positions, including commercial director and general manager, prior to his appointment as managing director in 2003. He first joined the industry as a medical rep and held several sales and marketing roles with SmithKline Beecham during 14 years at the company.

Peter Carr has joined the Pharmaceutical Marketing Society committee. He is currently managing director at medical communications specialist, Solaris. He was previously managing director at Ethical Strategies and Grey Healthcare, Europe, as well as chief executive at Fujisawa. Peter will assist the existing committee members with communications and education initiatives.

European specialty pharma firm, ProStrakan, has named Alan Walker as an executive director. Alan has served as the vice president of global commercial operations with ProStrakan since 2001. He is a former UK marketing director of Parke Davis, as well as a former director of international pharmaceutical marketing with Warner Lambert (at its headquarters in the US), which led to his appointment as managing director of the Elan/Warner Lambert (UK/Ireland) joint venture.

GlaxoSmithKline has announced the appointment of two new non-executive directors, Dr Ralph Horwitz and Tom De Swaan. Dr Horwitz is dean, School of Medicine and vice president of medical affairs at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, while Dr De Swaan is currently chief financial officer and member of the management board of ABN AMRO. He will join the audit committee and will succeed Dr Ronaldo Schmitz as its chairman in September.

David Keown has been hired as brand communications manager at sanofi-aventis. He will work alongside head of brand communications, Jeni Wilson, and report to UK comms director, Cressida Ward. David joins the firm from Packer Forbes where he was senior account director and worked on accounts, including International Herpes Alliance and Lilly/BI's antidepressant Cymbalta. He worked previously at Shire Health London for five years.

Nigel Thornton has been appointed UK and Ireland head of communications at Amgen. He was previously head of UK comms and marketing support at Anglo-Swiss seeds and crop science group, Syngenta. Based in Cambridge, Nigel will report to director of corporate affairs Anna SÈrman.

SkyePharma has appointed Dr Argeris Karabelas as non-executive chairman. He has held many senior global positions including, chief executive of Novartis Pharma and president of North American operations at SmithKline Beecham.

Eric Hansen has joined Ogilvy Healthworld Med Ed as account director. He has worked previously at Kinross and Render.

Central has appointed Rosie Kearney as associate partner. Rosie has more than 12 years' experience in pharmaceutical marketing and communications, including as a product manager at Novartis and as a director at Succinct Communications.

Shire Health London has hired Lindsay Wallace as programme manager. She joins with over two years' experience as communications officer with biotech firm, Acambis, and will be working on a number of key UK and global accounts including, Bondronat, Singulair and UVIG.

HealthGain Solutions has appointed Caroline Roberts as associate director of business development - specialist outsourced teams. She joins from Pfizer UK where she held senior management positions in brand and NHS marketing. Prior to Pfizer she worked with a number of pharma companies in sales, training and healthcare management.

Martin Anderson has launched Carrot Pharma Recruitment, a new consultancy specialising in sales, marketing and research positions within the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical devices sectors.

Pharma outsourcer, Penn Pharmaceutical Services has announced that Paul Thomas, director of quality since 2001, will fill the newly-created role of technical director. The current technical services team, led by Dr Fred Higton, has been extended to include technical specialists, Pam Turner, Debbie Williams and Rachel Hopkins. Meanwhile, Marc Rees and Claire Davies will transfer to the team as technical writers.

Gemma Bradley has joined Northbank Communications as account manager. Prior to joining Northbank, Gemma worked as PR officer at King's College London, where she was responsible for promoting scientific and medical research, and teaching through media outreach and newsletters.

Design agency, The Foundry, has recruited ChloÈ Sharman as account manager. She joins from Enterprise IG in London, where she worked with Legal & General, British Telecom and British Petroleum.

Sarah Young has joined Life Healthcare, from Seven Stones, as a senior copywriter. Sarah has more than 12 years' experience of pharmaceutical advertising, having worked across a wide range of therapy areas. Prior to her advertising career, she was a formulation scientist, developing new OTC drugs for SmithKline Beecham.

Richard Evans has been named managing director of DarwinGrey Communications, Grey Healthcare Group's UK-based med ed company. He will be responsible for strategic planning, and developing and implementing integrated communications programmes, including digital and web-based initiatives. Before joining DarwinGrey, Richard was managing director at Gardiner-Caldwell Communications (part of the Thompson group).

Chiltern International has announced the promotion of Linda Christmas to global director of its Integrated Resourcing Operations (CIRS). She has run the UK CIRS group for the past seven years.

Opencity Healthcare has made two new appointments: Dr Sinem Ayman and Rebecca Drake. Dr Ayman joins as account executive and worked previously as a post-doctoral researcher at King's College. Rebecca joins as an account manager from the publishing company, Informa.

PR and marketing agency LCM has employed specialist PR consultant Julie Dean to expand and develop its expertise in the medical and pharmaceutical marketplace. Julie joins the agency from hsdcommunications where she was associate director.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing's vice chairman, John Flynn, has been made chair-man of the Communication, Advertising and Marketing Education Foundation. He replaces Collin Lloyd.

Public Health Care Group's Medicus London has announced five new starters: Eric Bergey joins as senior account director, Minna Kane joins as an account executive, Claire Ashford and Simon Oldridge join as account managers, and Magda Bartoszewicz joins as senior account manager. Angela Garg joins associated firm, Discovery London, as account manager.

Woolley Pau has appointed Sophie Goswell as group head - ethical. She joins from Medicus London, where she was group account director across both the POM and OTC divisions. Woolley Pau has also promoted Kate Ashton and Jane Applin to senior account manager and account manager, respectively. They have both been with the firm for a year and both have four years' experience in healthcare advertising, working across both ethical and OTC brands.
