Michael D Ehlers 

Pfizer has appointed Michael D Ehlers, MD, PhD as chief scientific officer for Neuroscience Research. Dr Ehlers most recently served as the George Barth Geller professor in the department of neurobiology at Duke University and as an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Previously he served as the director, Neuroproteomics Laboratory at Duke University. Dr Ehlers, who has a particular interest in the workings of the memory, will take up his new role on August 16. He replaces Menelas Pangalos, who left Pfizer for AstraZeneca earlier this year.

Saatchi & Saatchi Healthcare has announced two new appointments within the account management team. Caroline Upfield joins as senior account executive from OnMedica, where she specialised in promotional and non-promotional digital e-learning for a large number of pharmaceutical and public sector companies. Sam Petyan has joined as senior account manager. Sam spent four years working for PAN Advertising across a range of national and international accounts.

Tim Mustill  

ACUMED, part of the KnowledgePoint360 Group, has appointed Tim Mustill as vice-president client services. Tim has held a number of senior positions in the pharmaceutical and healthcare communications industries, most recently as commercial director at Fishawack Communications.

Anup Shah has joined Woolley Pau as account director. Anup has over 20 years' experience in medical communications in the rheumatology, dermatology, oncology, cardiovascular, diabetes, cardiovascular, gastroenterology and gynaecology fields. Most recently he was senior clinical meetings manager for Wyeth.

Dani Sa'adu

Republic M! has appointed Dani Sa'adu to the role of account director with responsibility for directing MedCall. Dani has over eight years' experience in UK pharmaceuticals in both sales and sales training.

Actavis has appointed former Ratiopharm leader Dr Claudio Albrecht as its new CEO, replacing Sigurdur Oli Olafsson. Dr Albrecht has over 20 years' experience in the generics industry, having started his career with Sandoz in 1987. In 2008 he established Cometh, a consultancy that advised pharmaceutical companies on their growth strategies.

Masters Pharmaceuticals has appointed Bill Burns as non-executive chairman of its board. Bill has over 40 years' experience in the sector and has held several senior management roles at Roche. Most recently he was CEO of Roche Pharmaceuticals and a member of the corporate executive committee of the Roche Group.

Jan van de Winkel, formerly chief scientific officer, has been appointed chief executive of Genmab, following the departure of Lisa Drakeman, who tendered her resignation with immediate effect on June 15 after 12 years with the company.

Laurent Audoly, PhD, most recently biologics research site lead at Merck, has joined Pieris as chief scientific officer. Dr Audoly brings both pharma and biotech experience, with extensive expertise in therapeutic protein drug development. Over the course of his career, Dr Audoly has held research and managerial positions at Pfizer, MedImmune and Merck.

Janssen-Cilag has appointed David Keown to the role of senior communications manager. David, who has more than 13 years' experience in healthcare PR, will be responsible for brands including Stelara, Concerta XL and Risperdal Consta.

Dr Wafik Bardissi, chairman and CEO of Minapharm, has been elected chairman of the supervisory board of ProBioGen and Dr Wieland Wolf has been appointed chief executive officer, succeeding Michael Schlenk. Dr Wolf, president of the European Association of Pharma Biotechnology, joins from Rentschler Biotechnologie, where he was a member of the management board.

The UK operation of Omega Pharma (previously trading as Chefaro) has undergone a transformation. The new team — led by managing director Nigel Bathhurst, who is joined by marketing director Andy Wines and sales director Kay Patton — is based in new offices in central London.

Dr Duncan Gould will be joining the board of QMI as medical director. Dr Gould has extensive pharmaceutical industry experience, both as a pharmaceutical physician and healthcare management consultant, combined with twenty years' experience as a practising clinician.

Former Cohn & Wolfe board director Jo Spadaccino has joined Pegasus as  director of the agency's pharma and life sciences division, which currently includes clients in dermatology, oncology and child health. As part of the senior leadership team at Cohn & Wolfe, Jo spent the last seven years working with clients including Merck Sharpe & Dohme, AstraZeneca, GSK, Bayer and European League against Rheumatism. has announced the appointment of Gareth Thomas to the newly created role of international development director. Gareth's target is to establish a foothold for in core European pharmaceutical markets by the end of 2010. He joins from Skila, where he was vice president and head of Europe. Gareth previously held a number of senior management roles at both Cegedim and Dendrite; most recently as vice president Northern Europe for Cegedim Dendrite.

The MSI Consultancy has appointed Simon Couldstone as a consultant. Simon joins MSI from Bristol Myers-Squibb, where he led diabetes marketing activities for the company's joint venture with AstraZeneca. Prior to this, he spent eight years working in various commercial roles at Novo Nordisk.

J&D Associates has confirmed three new appointments to its London based UK operation. Lolita Banerji joins as managing consultant from GfK Healthcare where she held the position of associate director. Rossella Salandra joins as a business analyst. She has over 3 years' experience in industry and consulting, with a focus on forecasting and modelling. Douglas Maffei, PhD is a business analyst working in forecasting and business analytics as well as clinical evaluations to support consulting projects.

Insight Research Group has made new appointments in its UK-based research team. Lee Gazey, a research director at Insight for the last two years, has taken on the newly created role of commercial development director. Insight also has hired Emma Stewart and Jenny Service as senior research executives and Siobhan Connolly and Anthony Rowbottom as research executives. Emma previously worked at Ipsos, Jenny joins from Directions Research and Marketing, Siobhan joins from Research Works and Anthony comes from Kadence International.

PAN Advertising has made two new appointments in its creative department. Adam Wood joins as junior copywriter and Gareth Goh as copywriter. Adam has a degree in Natural Sciences from Durham University, while Gareth joins from Huntsworth Health where he was a medical writer.

Stephanie Hall has launched Uptake Strategies, a consultancy with a focus on launch excellence, marketing planning and competitive strategy. Stephanie is joined by Georgina Lonsdale, Liz Ainslie, Maxine Smith and Roz Abery, who combine many years of pharma experience in senior commercial roles at GSK, Eli Lilly, sanofi-aventis, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Abbott.

David Youds has joined Replay Healthcare Digital Media as a director. David holds responsibility for the company's increased focus on integrated digital communication solutions, building on Replay's film and animation heritage. He joins Replay from Archimedes Pharma where he was director of strategic marketing. He has also held national and international marketing positions at Baxter and Novartis respectively.

Claire Jackson has joined Prism Ideas as an account director and will be based in their Basel office. Claire had previously worked as a senior brand manager at Roche and comes to Prism with marketing experience across a variety of disease areas.

4Sight has launched its new conference division, Performance Meetings, and made two new appointments. Claudia Collingbourne will be heading up the division in her capacity as marketing and events director. She is joined by Laura Young, who has moved from within the group to become meetings manager.

Cegedim Dendrite has appointed Alison Novell to the role of account manager. Alison brings more than eight years' experience in sales and account management to the role, predominantly working for the pharmaceutical industry, as well as working as a medical sales representative for a pharmaceutical company for two years.

Adventis Health has added a new account executive to each of its three integrated business units. Leah Abella has moved from being a trained actress appearing in a number of Adventis-produced eLearning programmes to working behind the scenes on their development. Rimmy Junday gained a BSc in biochemistry and an MBA in marketing before entering the world of medical communications. Kirsty Mead spent a year working in haematology with Baxter Healthcare before joining Adventis.

Medea Communications has engaged Dr Gilbert Park, until recently chair of the Joint Drugs and Therapeutics committee at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, to act as an expert consultant. Dr Park will act in an advisory capacity to the agency, with specific focus on helping pharmaceutical companies to navigate the ever-changing NHS.

ScopeMedical has recently announced five internal promotions. Sophie Smith and Louise Carrington have been promoted to the role of account executive; Delphine Reynaud has been appointed senior account executive; Ben King has been named senior account manager and Hazel Dodson has been promoted to project co-ordinator.
