Ken Jones has been appointed president and chief executive of Astellas Pharma Europe, the European subsidiary of Japan-based Astellas Pharma. Jones, who leaves his role of chief operating officer with the company, replaces Masao Yoshida who has been appointed as president and CEO of Astellas' US division. "I am delighted and honoured to be taking on this new role and I look forward to building on Astellas Pharma Europe's considerable achievements," said Jones. "In spite of the tough market conditions which the industry is facing, we're in a strong position and have clear strategies for growth through expanding and developing our core franchises." These strategies include expanding the company's efforts into pain management, anti-infectives and oncology while maintaining a leading presence in transplantation and urology. Takeda Pharmaceutical Company has promoted Trevor Smith from vice-president of international strategy to chief executive of Takeda Pharmaceuticals Europe. Smith has worked at Takeda for more than 10 years. Before joining Takeda, he worked at Servier Laboratories.

Stephen Whitehead  

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry has appointed Stephen Whitehead as chief executive. He will take up his post on June 1, replacing Richard Barker who steps down as director general on May 25. Whitehead's most recent role was group communications director at Prudential and he has previously held senior leadership roles at Barclays and Allied Domecq. Earlier in his career he spent 10 years at GlaxoSmithKline and Eli Lilly at UK, European and international level.

Almirall has selected Ignasi Martí Ragué as director of institutional relations. His main mission will be to convey to healthcare managers and society in general the value of the therapeutic solutions offered by Almirall. He has 27 years' experience in the pharmaceutical sector.

Carwyn & Mat

The Pharmaceutical Marketing Society has appointed Carwyn Jones and Mat Phillips to its main committee. Jones, head of pharmaceutical sales at Doctors.net, has 15 years' industry experience. He will focus his efforts on the Society's Education sub-Committee and all areas of digital media. Phillips has 22 years' industry experience, including 10 years with Johnson & Johnson. He founded Neovoca and is a consultant at Orital.

IDEA Pharma has added Pankaj Oza to its IDEAtion delivery team. Pankaj has more than 20 years' industry experience and will be responsible for delivering strategic input across therapy areas and increasing the value of new molecules through bespoke solutions.

Gillian Newbold

Healthcare research agency HRW has promoted Gillian Newbold to the board of directors. She joined the company in 2009 and is currently research director (strategy).

Tim Brooks has been chosen as the managing director of Leapfrog Research and Planning. Brooks moves from his role as UK marketing director at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare.

Daria Blackwell

Daria Blackwell has been named the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association's (HBA) 2011 Star Volunteer. She is a healthcare marketing consultant and former managing partner of advertising agency Sudler & Hennessey. Through her role at the HBA she has played a key role in marketing to women and women physicians, and marketing with cultural competence.

Nicola Miles has joined MedeConnect Healthcare Insight (the market research division of Doctors.net.uk) as business development director for field services. She is responsible for providing operational guidance on the agency's extensive range of field and tab research projects - including the GP Omnibus service, speciality research and online focus groups - which access the Doctors.net.uk online community.

Mark Duckham

Adventis Health has appointed Mark Duckham to the role of client services director with a brief to review and enhance the agency's account handling team. Mark has 15 years' experience in the pharma service sector and has held several senior positions including his most recent role as MD of KantarHealth and his former role as MD of Grey Healthcare.

Tomas Lännhult has joined pharmaceutical consultancy firm The MSI Consultancy. He joins from Medtronic where he held the role of diabetes product manager. Tomas has substantial experience in the pharmaceutical industry and has worked for both sanofi-aventis and Novartis.

Tanya von Ahlefeldt

Tudor Reilly has strengthened its senior team with the appointment of Tanya von Ahlefeldt as director. She joins from Bell Pottinger Health and brings over 15 years of healthcare experience. Tanya will focus on business development and offer senior strategic counsel across both UK and global accounts, working alongside Managing Director, Julie Walters and fellow directors, Peter Coё and Sharon Chilton.

 

Healthcare at Home has appointed Nigel Brooksby as a senior strategic adviser and Graeme Duncan as director of strategy, for the company's fast-growing pharmaceutical services business. Brooksby has almost 40 years' experience in the life sciences industry. Most recently he was chairman and managing director of sanofi-aventis in the UK, where he was also a member of sanofi-aventis' European executive committee. From 2008 to 2010 he was president of the UK's Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and served as a member of the Confederation of British Industry's presidents committee.


AVEO Pharmaceuticals has appointed Henri A Termeer, outgoing chairman, president and chief executive of Genzyme Corporation, to its board of directors. Termeer has served as president and a director of Genzyme Corporation since 1983, its chief executive officer since 1985 and as chairman since 1988. In addition, AVEO announced that directors Douglas Cole, a general partner at Flagship Ventures, and Russell Hirsch, managing director of Prospect Venture Partners, will not stand for re-election at AVEO's 2011 annual meeting in June.


Janet Hammond has joined Roche as vice-president of translational medicine – virology in pharmaceutical research and early development. She will be responsible for driving strategy and implementation of early clinical development for the Virology DTA. She has previously worked for Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Bristol-Myers Squibb and GlaxoSmithKline.


Roche Diagnostics has appointed Robert Yates as head of Roche Applied Science. He succeeds Manfred Baier, who will be retiring at the end of 2011. Yates previously held increasing leadership positions in R&D, engineering and process management within Roche Diagnostics, in Indianapolis and in Roche´s headquarters in Basel. Most recently, he served as global head of business development and licensing.


Dr Christine Johnson and Dr David Paynton have been appointed as joint Clinical Leads for the Royal College General Practitioners Centre for Commissioning. They will provide clinical leadership to the centre, which aims to help GPs, practices and emerging GP consortia develop the skills, competences and expertise required to commission high quality health services, to improve patient care.


Neurotone has added Dr Raimund Eckel to its board of directors alongside Gerhard Musshafen and Dr Bruno Oesch. Meanwhile Dr Armin W Mäder is promoted to chief executive, taking over from Oesch who will focus more on business development.


Margot Rozga has joined OPEN Health as an associate partner. Rozga has worked in the pharmaceutical and communications industries for 15 years. Her responsibility will be to build the medical communications business with Sandy Royden.


ICON has promoted Kornelia Martin to vice-president of European operations. Martin will be responsible for driving ICON Medical Imaging's activities in Europe, which were expanded through the acquisition of Timaq Medical Imaging in May 2010. She joined ICON Medical Imaging in January 2009 as senior director of business development. Previously Martin held sales and scientific roles in Europe and the US for FOCUS Clinical Drug Development, Synarc and Baxter Oncology, Cellular Therapy.


ICON has also appointed Dr Malcolm Burgess as executive vice-president, Asia-Pacific. It has also selected Paula Mumby as vice-president, operations, Asia Pacific for its resourcing business unit DOCS.


Switzerland's Actelion has proposed that Jean-Pierre Garnier, the former GlaxoSmithKline chief executive officer, and Robert Bertolini, the former Schering-Plough finance chief, join its board, with a view to Garnier becoming chairman next year.


Sarah Phillips of Ipsos, Abigail Stuart of Hall and Partners and Kim Hughes of The Planning Shop International have been selected from a number of candidates to join the European Pharmaceutical Market Research Association (EphMRA) Board as Associate Members.


Ogilvy Healthworld Market Access has appointed Carsten Edwards as managing partner with effect from June 2011. Carsten will be responsible for working in partnership with the London and US based teams to deliver access programmes and initiatives that meet the ever-evolving market access needs of the industry. Carsten joins Ogilvy Healthworld Market Access from Chandler Chicco Companies where he held the position of managing director for Brandtectonics Access.
