David Garmon-Jones has been appointed as managing director of Merck Pharmaceuticals UK
David Garmon-Jones has been appointed as managing director of Merck Pharmaceuticals UK, replacing Dr Soeren Hermansson who has taken on the role of vice-president (Asia/Pacific) for the company. David has served with Merck for more than 20 years and has held senior positions in sales and marketing functions. Prior to his new appointment, he was head of sales.

John Matthews has been appointed as UK head of clinical operations at sanofi-aventis, where he will be responsible for the delivery of late-phase studies, as well as supporting the UK medical and marketing teams' clinical strategies. He joins from Wyeth where he was clinical research manager.

Robert Burton and Julian Harris have joined marketing training consultancy Pharma Marketing Academy as account directors. To take up their new positions, both left AstraZeneca, where Rob served most recently in international partnering and alliances. He has more than 20 years' experience of the pharma industry and is a seasoned marketer. Julian was regional sales and marketing training manager for the Middle East and Africa. He has a diploma in performance coaching.

The board of directors at Shire has appointed experienced lawyer Kate Nealon as a non-executive director and member of the remuneration committee. She has particular experience in mergers and acquisitions, compliance and global regulatory issues.

Penn Pharmaceutical, the outsourcing services provider, has appointed Damian Gant as a project manager. He has more than 10 years' project and account management experience working on behalf of international pharmaceutical companies.

Laura D'Souza has been promoted to the position of marketing manager for Pharmisis and Medisis, health-care information sources provided to the pharma industry by CPG Logistics.

Precision Direct Marketing has recruited Nik Mendel as business unit director responsible for developing direct marketing services with ethical pharmacos. Dominic Murdoch moves from his post as client services director to take up the role of business unit director responsible for the OTC and optical sectors, while Alison Sime joins the company as production director.

Cegedim has made two new appointments: Christopher Wooden is regional vice-president, having served the firm formerly as vice-president for Cegedim strategic data operations in Japan, the UK and Ireland. Denham Lansdell joins the firm as client service manager with responsibilities for ad hoc research and the group's promotional tracking audit. He has served Pfizer as a representative in primary and secondary care in the UK and South Africa, and worked as a business analyst at Propagate Pharma.

Healthcare communications and NHS relations firm Medical Management Services has appointed Hannah Noel as business development and account manager. Reporting directly to managing director Clive Johnstone, she will manage existing and new business in the PR and medical education sectors.

Pharmaceutical sales and marketing recruitment firm Zenopa is moving into healthcare communications and PR, and has recruited Hayley Doel to serve its interests in this area.

Global named patient specialist IDIS has appointed Richard Augotoski as head of business development. Richard's former roles include a stint with IMS Health, where he was a key account director, and as business development director for Ventiv Health. He began his pharma career in sales and marketing.


Recently formed healthcare communications company Just:: has announced the appointment of Hayley Wood, who joins as a senior consultant. Hayley has more than 10 years' experience of healthcare PR, having worked at Cohn & Wolfe for three years alongside Just:: co-founder Emma Crozier. Hayley worked most recently as an account director at Red Door Communications.

Ruden Finn has hired Rob Jones as account manager in the cardiovascular and oncology business areas. He has more than five years' experience of healthcare PR and pharma, having began his career at Roche where he was in a pharma development team.

Global healthcare comms agency Medicus International has promoted Miranda Gladding to the position of director of client services, New York. Reporting directly to managing director Peneli Oliver, Miranda will support the existing client service teams in the New York office. She has 13 years' experience of the healthcare industry in medical education and CME activities in a number of therapy areas. has announced the appointment of Simon Pickup into the newly created post of business development director. He has more than 10 years' experience of pharmaceutical business, having served in sales, account management and more recently marketing positions. Simon joins the company from Lilly. now claims to have access to more than 85 per cent of the active doctor population in both primary and secondary care.

Jamie Holyer has launched Advocate, the first independent public affairs agency dedicated exclusively to healthcare. Advocate aims to help clients to understand the political environment and develop and implement strategic communication programmes. Jamie is a former Labour Party press officer and senior public affairs practitioner, having worked at Fleishman-Hillard. He began his career as a political researcher and journalist at the BBC.

Natasha Barretto and Viv Farr have been promoted to the positions of research director at Insight Research Group. They both have extensive experience of international and UK healthcare marketing research.

Activity Benchmarking has hired Richard Addy as manager, sales and marketing services. He joins from IMS Health.

Jonathan Burridge has joined Nucare as pharmacy development manager for south west England and south Wales.

Pharmaceutical Marketing Ltd has hired Paul Waddingham as a business development director working across several of the group's targeted trade publications for the pharmaceutical, healthcare PR and medical education sectors. He served formerly at PharmaFile where he was sales manager for over five years. He was previously a mature student at Brighton University where he studied business management. Jo Learmonth also recently joined the company as senior marketing executive. She worked formerly at John Wiley & Sons publishers, marketing to professional, educational and academic markets. In her new role, she will help to achieve all sales objectives for the PML portfolio by the strategic planning, implementation and review of targeted marketing campaigns, as well as raising awareness of new initiatives.

Resolute Communications has made 10 new hires: Mike Weston joins from Future Brand as finance director with over 30 years' experience of financial management, of which 10 years were in PR. Quyen Chu joins the agency as a medical writer, with a PhD in pharmacology from Kings College. Other new hires include Amelia Baio and Lizzy Ray as senior account executives, and Nicole Bromley and Sejal Sedani as account executives. Glenn Haliwell, who joined in June from Oxford University as a junior account executive, has been promoted to account executive, while three new recent university graduates joining the firm at entry level are Paul Lynch, from Newcastle University, Nehal Savani, from the University of Westminster and Rosie Elliott, from the University of Central Lancashire.
