David Mawdsley has been appointed vice president and head of global media relations at GlaxoSmithKline. He replaces Philip Thomson, who was appointed senior vice president, global communications in June. David was previously vice president, investor relations. He joined GSK in 2003 and prior to his time with investor relations, was director and deputy head of the UK corporate media relations team. Before joining GSK, David worked in corporate communications for National Grid and held several senior advisory roles in the UK Conservative Party. He will be replaced as vice president and head of global investor relations by Sally Ferguson.

Ajit Shetty, chairman of the board and managing director of Janssen Pharmaceutica, will fill a newly created position at Janssen's parent company Johnson & Johnson (J&J), serving as a corporate vice president to oversee quality improvement efforts for J&J's pharmaceutical, consumer products, medical device and diagnostics groups. J&J has also appointed chief quality officers for each of its three major business units to report to Dr Shetty, who has been with J&J since 1976. He was raised in India and holds an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University in the US, as well as a PhD from Cambridge.

Several new faces have joined the regulars at Life Healthcare Communications — seen here in the Hernes Oak (a pub converted by the agency for their new offices). Cegedim Strategic Data UK has made two new appointments. Adam Harris, previously deputy MD at KantarHealth UK, has joined CSD UK as senior accounts director and Aisling Hall has been appointed client service executive to work on the syndicated data portfolio.

Aurora has hired Emma Ellwood as a new addition to the team. Emma joins from Tonic Life Communications, where she was an account executive. The company has also made three internal promotions: Katie Armson, who joined Aurora from Cohn & Wolfe in January, has been promoted to senior account executive and long-standing team members Sarah Hoffman and Aaron Pond have been promoted to the roles of associate director and account director & digital lead, respectively.

Just:: has hired Helen Laurence as a new senior consultant. Helen joins Just:: following a year at Alzheimer's Society, where she worked in the press office. Prior to this Helen spent five years in agency. Other recent hires include Ashley Lewis from MS&L Group and Gemma Taylor from Hill & Knowlton, both joining as consultants. Melanie Bickers has joined as a  junior consultant and Andy Patten has been hired as office manager.

Business communications consultancy Gollege Hill Life Sciences has promoted Dr Lynne Trowbridge to partner. Since joining in 2009 from Novartis, where she was UK communications manager for its Institute for BioMedical Research, Dr Trowbridge has led the team's pharma, tools, technologies and services work and spearheaded marketing communications. Dr Trowbridge has more than 12 years' life sciences industry experience, developing and driving marketing strategies and communications programmes. 


RJW & Partners has appointed Natalie Shalet as senior consultant. Natalie, who has over 10 years' experience in the pharmaceutical and consulting industries, joins from Kantar Health, where she held the role of director of pricing and market access.

Dr Henrik Lund has taken over the position of CEO at Bionor Pharma in Norway. Most recently Henrik headed up clinical development activities of Astra Zeneca in Europe, Asia and Latin America (43 countries).

Sir John Savill has been appointed chief executive and deputy chair of the Medical Research Council (MRC) and will take up the three-year appointment on October 1, 2010. Sir John Chisholm has also been re-appointed chair of the MRC for a further two years.

US-based King Pharmaceuticals has appointed Jeffrey A Bailey to the position of chief commercial officer responsible for the company's commercial activities in the branded pharmaceutical business. He will lead all sales, marketing, managed care, sales operations and business analytics.

The BioIndustry Association (BIA) board has elected Tim Edwards as its new chairman. Mr Edwards succeeds Dr Clive Dix, who will remain a member of the BIA Board. Tim is president and CEO of Cellzome. Previously, he held various positions at British Biotech, including board director and acting CEO, and before that was an Investment Banker in London specialising in the healthcare sector.

CT Atlantic has announced the appointments of Michael Höcker as CEO and Cara Lerner as chief operating officer. Michael most recently served as global medical director at Hoffmann-La Roche and Cara originally joined the company in 2009 as head of programme management.

Dr Neill Moray Mackenzie has joined CMP Therapeutics as chief executive. Dr Mackenzie  previously held executive board management level roles, most recently at Medigene, where he was senior VP for business development and corporate strategy.

MedImmune has named Scott Carmer executive vice president of commercial operations.

Dr Pierre Attali, who has been serving BioAlliance Pharma as chief medical officer for several years, has been appointed as the company's CEO. The announcement comes following the resignation of Dr Gilles Avenard as board member and deputy CEO in charge of R&D.

Prism Ideas has announced the appointment of Nigel Brooksby as non-executive chairman. Nigel has more than 35 years' experience in the life sciences industry, culminating in his position as chairman and managing director of sanofi-aventis UK.

TBWA\Paling Walters has promoted former client services director Andy Hayley to managing director. Andy has been at the company for 10 years, and his accounts have included Lipitor, Viagra, NiQuitin and seven GSK consumer brands. He succeeds company founder Michael Paling, who will remain in a non-executive chairman's role.

MS&L has hired Matt Gardner to lead its Western US region healthcare team. Matt, most recently president and CEO of BayBio, will serve as a senior vice president in the San Francisco office. In addition to his new role, Matt is co-founder and director of Cornerstone Integrated Solutions, a Florida-based consulting firm that offers a range of services to biotech and life sciences companies, from start-up preparedness to clinical readiness.

Chandler Chicco Companies (CCC) has announced the appointment of Alison Wright to a newly created role in the senior team. Alison joins CCC Europe from Cohn & Wolfe London, where she led and delivered a wide range of global, European and UK programmes for clients in the pharmaceutical and healthcare arena.

Liz Sanders has joined MSA Digital as account director. Liz joins from Emap Publishing.

Demitri Gabrielides has joined PharmIntel as business partner to manage the Wellards EU launch programme. Demitri has over 20 years' experience in commercial roles in sales, marketing and HR projects in Europe and the Middle East. He has previously worked at Wyeth and more recently Skype.

Kendle has appointed Dr Michael J Gallagher as vice president and global head medical affairs. Dr Gallagher, who served most recently as the global gastrointestinal therapeutic area group leader for ICON Clinical Research, has particular expertise in gastrointestinal medicine, CNS, rheumatology, respiratory disease, pain management, infectious disease and genitourinary disorders.

Informa Healthcare has appointed Dr Dimitri P Mikhailidis as editor-in-chief of its first open access online journal, the Journal of Drug Assessment (JDA), which is still due to launch. He will also continue to serve as editor-in-chief for a portfolio of Informa Healthcare clinical trial journals.
