Last night, PMGroup hosted the eighth Annual Pharmaceutical Marketing Effectiveness Awards (PMEA) at the Dorchester Hotel in London, to recognise and reward excellence in fully integrated marketing. This year's event raised the bar once again with a record number of entries from an even wider range of companies, large and small, and a record number of attendees at the event.
According to Mark Savage, director of PMGroup: "Winning a PMEA is regarded as one of the highly prized accolades in pharmaceuticals and healthcare today." The work honoured at the event is the best of the best and carries a huge responsibility, he continued. "We could genuinely use all the work represented here tonight to demonstrate the health benefit that our industry continues to provide for us all, be we consumers or patients – to say nothing of the NHS itself, with more and more partnerships proving successful in improving delivery of healthcare to people all around the country," he said.
Chairperson of the judging panel for the second year running, Dr Roger Watson, introduced several changes to the awards format, based on feedback gathered from the marketplace. Changes include the introduction of three new categories, namely: medical devices marketing, local marketing excellence and the marketing team of the year. In addition, before sponsors handed awards to category winners, a representative from the judging panel came on stage to enlighten the audience as to the reasons for their winner selection. This new addition to the format was well received by attendees wanting to hone their entries for next year's event.
The host of the night was celebrated news reader and television presenter, John Suchet, who entertained the audience with stories from his 35-year career and musings over his brother – David Suchet's recent Best Actor Emmy award for Maxwell, claiming: "Even those who least expect it could win!"
The chosen charity for this year's award was the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Spokesperson for the charity Richard Stewart explained that the hospital treats over 200 000 seriously ill children a year, half of which are under three years of age. This renowned centre of excellence requires £50m a year to cover the costs of equipment, research and treatment. An impressive £4,000 was raised in donations for the charity. All donations were entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a spectacular helicopter flight over the Surrey and Sussex country side, followed by lunch at Amberley Castle, generously sponsored by Genesis Adoration. Congratulations to Carys Thomas Ampofo from Ash Healthcare who took home the coveted prize.
