Videum supports online campaign to reach 'underserved' RA patients

The project provides educational resources to the UK's South Asian communities
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Apni Jung website

Videum has taken part in a new online campaign to reach underserved populations with the UK's South Asian communities who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

Launched in April, the project - called 'Rheumatoid Arthritis: Apni Jung (Our fight against RA)' - provides the first online hub of educational materials about rheumatoid arthritis and its treatment in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi.

The collaboration with the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) and Manchester University uses Videum's medical translation services and subtitling technology in videos produced by the RA charity.

Videum said the work is the first time that a multi-language technology platform has been used by a third sector organisation.

As well as translation and subtitling, Videum displays interactive transcripts about RA alongside the videos that are clickable and indexed by search engines.

The videos are designed to enable patients who don't speak English as a first language access verified information on their condition, and includes clips of patients speaking in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi about their experiences.

Through the website, the NRAS and Manchester University hope to highlight the importance of early diagnosis to these communities, and raise awareness about the treatment of RA.

Commenting on the project launch, chief executive at NRAS Ailsa Bosworth said she would “urge rheumatologists to direct their South Asian patients to the … website” so that those patients might feel supported and less isolated in their condition.
