COUCH Health publishes report to encourage patient engagement in the MedTech sector

Manchester, UK, 27 February 2023 — COUCH Health today announced the publication of a new report “The Power of Patient Engagement in MedTech”.

The report was conducted and produced by the COUCH Health in-house research team, who spoke to organisations with expertise in medical device development, clinical research, and patient engagement to learn more about opportunities for patient engagement in MedTech. The report draws on the insights and data gained from recent literature, as well as the real-life experiences shared from these organisations, to provide an understanding of the current landscape of patient engagement in MedTech and the key opportunities for the industry moving forward.

Commenting on the report, Natasha Ratcliffe, Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships at COUCH Health, remarks:

“At COUCH Health, we advocate for engaging with and involving patients as early as possible with our clients, particularly in the development and testing of potential new treatments and products. We know from experience that embedding patient engagement isn’t easy, and our research has revealed a number of recurring challenges across the MedTech industry that are currently hindering uptake of patient engagement. That is why I welcome this report and the impact it may have”

Key report learnings

+ Patient engagement in MedTech is necessary and a logical investment. It would be remiss of the organisations developing medical devices, that are going to be used by patients, to not involve those very patients in the design and development process.

+ The benefits of patient engagement are two-fold. Engaging with patients throughout the device development processes brings benefits to both patients and the industry in many ways.

+ There are barriers, but they can be overcome. We know from experience that embedding patient engagement isn’t easy. However, real-world examples demonstrate they can be overcome, and patient engagement can have a positive — even life-changing — impact.

+ There is no better time to start than now. More people are getting on board, and regulators are starting to catch up.  Patient engagement is something that the MedTech sector can’t afford to avoid.

#DemandDiversity: Why cultural safety is an important step towards achieving diversity in clinical trials
In our recent Demand Diversity research, a Black American participant said, “I wish people were more educated. Doctors are supposed to treat everyone the same, not have favourites. They need unconscious bias training.”

How do ethnic minority groups in the U.S. view clinical trials?
This year, we decided to do the same with ethnic minority communities over in the United States (U.S.) too. Ultimately, we wanted to explore attitudes towards clinical trials from these communities, understand the barriers in participation, and determine what factors may influence people’s decisions to take part.

#DemandDiversity: We’re calling on the clinical trials industry to include us all
The lack of diversity in clinical trials is something we’ve spoken about time and time again. By now, you might think we sound a bit like a broken record. But, the fact is, many people still aren’t aware of the underrepresentation, especially those who don’t work in the industry. Do you think if the clinical research industry could see the people they were leaving out of clinical trials, and hear how they felt about being underrepresented, it would make a difference?
