Starting a career in medical communications – experiences from the Nucleus Academy (part 2)

Two more graduates of the Nucleus Academy training programme share their experiences of the Academy and their medical communications careers to date.

- PMLiVEGemma Glasscock – Associate Medical Writer
After finishing my Biosciences degree in 2020, I was unsure what I wanted to do or what avenues were available to me in the field of science. I found out about Nucleus’s Academy programme via LinkedIn and it instantly stood out to me; the industry is centred around science communication and writing which encapsulated everything I loved about my degree. Also, the fact that I could apply to this fully paid training programme without any prior MedComms experience was ideal.

The recruitment process was stringent but enjoyable; my interview felt more like a conversation than anything too intimidating, which put me at ease! I heard back in a couple of weeks and I started virtually in September. The virtual Academy was great; as much as we’d have loved to meet in person, it worked really well online. We had training on such wide-ranging topics as manuscript writing, PowerPoint skills, statistics, creating budgets and data-checking. We also worked on a variety of solo and group assignments, including making videos and a pitch exercise, which all contributed to our building knowledge of MedComms; the group assignments were definitely one of my favourite aspects of the programme.

The transition from Academy to agency life was seamless, with the agency work getting much more manageable as the Academy sessions tapered off. I am now working on a variety of projects and am involved in my agency’s social media team, as well as the company’s Sustainability and Environment Employee Resource Group.

- PMLiVEVioleta Trendafilova – Senior Account Executive
Halfway through my Ph.D., it became quite clear that I needed a change of scenery; but I still wanted to use my scientific background, so Med Comms seemed like the perfect opportunity. I applied for the Academy during a Med Comms event, and after speaking with the recruitment team I was sure that was the place for me, as everyone was so enthusiastic about Nucleus Global – and very welcoming, which is reassuring when starting a new job.

I joined the Academy in 2019 and was very fortunate to be part of such a great team, to learn from knowledgeable and inspiring mentors, and have the opportunity to experience both medical writing and client services. The Academy gave me the solid foundation I needed for my career development, and 2 years on I still enjoy my job every day and find it very rewarding.

In my 2 years in Nucleus Global I have worked on a variety of projects and therapy areas, and I can truly say there is never a dull moment, especially with such a fantastic team as mine! The Nucleus Academy was the right choice for me and has helped me advance my career and scientific knowledge immensely.  I am excited to see what the future holds!
