Flexible working success

The measure of intelligence is the ability to change… Albert Einstein

Four Communications has introduced a fully flexible working policy across all locations and offices, which means that any member of staff can work from home as much or as little as they like, unless they have face-to-face commitments. The policy was introduced after an extensive staff consultation exercise, carried out during 2020.

We were in somewhat of a unique position, as we were already in the final stages of our laptop roll-out, which our IT team had almost completed before COVID-19 hit.  So, when we asked all staff to work from home last March, our IT infrastructure was already in place, making the transition to our flexible working policy, even smoother.

Giving people choice and control when it comes to work location has been enthusiastically received.  We’re seeing some people who are keen to come in every day, whilst others agree regular team days or come in when they are needed for client meetings.

Remote working doesn’t mean remote thinking, though.  We have ensured that all staff have additional equipment they need to make home working a safe and productive environment.  We are also very conscious that new working practices may bring new challenges and when it comes to mental wellbeing, we regularly share resource information in our staff newsletters as well as highlighting online mental health workshops and signposting mental health first aiders within the company.
