Session 3: Systems Innovation Examples and Process

In this session, we discussed the processes involved in systems innovation and reviewed a few examples. We examined the transformational changes that can evolve over time when we go beyond “cause and effect” thinking. We discussed the importance of context and reflexivity in evolutionary thinking, the need for consistent iteration and adaptation so we can learn and grow as systems, how to leverage friction and tension to answer unsolved questions, and how to work both within practical and abstract perspectives in order to overcome societal crises. We reviewed the positive disruptions of new technologies such as 3D printing and blockchain and had a discussion about the possible ways to use today’s political, economic, health, and social pandemics to multisolve and co-create brand new systems and structures within our current world order.
