My Journey into Medical Communications #LucidLife

In NetworkPharma’s latest career guide for wannabe account managers, our very own Aveen Hamid discusses her journey into medical communications and the opportunity to work on programmes that transform patients’ lives.

I graduated with a degree in Chemistry and, having worked in a laboratory for about a year, I wanted to experience a different role within the field of science. Whilst medcomms was completely new to me it sounded very exciting, and I was lucky enough to land a job at Lucid Group on a temporary three-month contract; I have now been here for more than 18 months and I’ve not looked back once!

My first role was largely client-facing, working within the dermatology team, providing support on various projects. It was also very diverse and no two days were the same; within the space of a week I could be working on multiple projects from creating project plans, responding to queries and managing budgets, to working with scientific experts and videographers for a film project.

Since then I have worked with other teams in different therapy areas, enabling me to develop and hone the vital skills required for account management. I have also learned considerably more about the medcomms business as a whole and how Lucid’s values and culture are at the core of everything it does, and how everyone here is united by the same drive and passion to transform patients’ lives. A standout moment for me was producing the materials needed for ESC, the world’s largest cardiology congress, which took place in Paris this year. It felt a privilege to be involved in something that would have such a positive impact on patients’ lives in the future.

On a technical level, I have gained and enhanced various transferable skills needed to work effectively; namely, my communication and organisational skills which have never been so stretched. If you’re thinking of entering medcomms be prepared to be kept on your toes, but with hard work comes great rewards. As my knowledge and experience progress, I am increasingly being given greater flexibility so I can create a work-life balance that works for me.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from working at Lucid is the importance of teamwork. The way we work as a team defines our success – supporting, inspiring and motivating each other when deadlines are fast approaching and the to-do list is ever-growing. Together we conquer. Always!
