Taking the ‘free’ out of ‘freelance’ and bringing it in-house

- PMLiVE

In this month’s Smart Thinking blog on PMLive.com, Stephanie Wasek, now a permanent principal medical writer at Lucid Group, draws her experience to discuss the highs and lows of being a freelance medical writer today.

Stephanie points out that although freelance has historically been the best route for guaranteeing part-time, flexible, remote or some-other-arrangement working, some organisations have embedded the practice of tailoring employment to fit with individual needs.

Did you know? At Lucid, more than 20% of our medical writers work part-time.

Stephanie also discusses the challenges imposed by the impact of COVID-19 and how the impending changes to enforcement of IR35 may tip the balance — HMRC will eventually shift the inside/outside determination to private companies, and many agencies will bring most work inside IR35. That leaves freelancers to choose between less take-home pay or fighting for higher day rates, to consider paying umbrella company fees in exchange for PAYE assurance (but perhaps not other benefits of employment), or to spend more time sourcing IR35-friendly contracts.

You can read the full blog here.

If you’re an experienced medical writer who wants it all, please get in touch.
We’re hiring and ready to deliver you with a tailor-made career.
