Starting a career in medical communications – experiences from the Nucleus Academy

Two graduates of the Nucleus Academy training programme share their experiences of the Academy and their medical communications careers to date.

Ellie Hughes – Account Executive
I found out about the Nucleus Global programme through a Google search! I didn’t know too much about the programme prior to applying for the role, but I was attracted to Nucleus Global, as it appeared to be very well established and I agreed with the values the company stood for.

I applied to Nucleus online and proceeded to have a phone call with Jenny Loveday, who gave a me a bit more background on the Nucleus Academy. I was then asked to complete a writing test before attending the full day assessment and interview. The recruitment process was rigorous, but worth it!

The actual programme was face-to-face for 2 weeks (pre-lockdown) and virtual for the remainder. The modules covered both the Medical Writing and Client Services sides of the business and included everything from how to pitch for new business to crucial statistics for medical writing. The learning was largely virtual, over Microsoft Teams; however, with use of breakout rooms, it was easy to get to know my Academy colleagues.

My career at Nucleus Global has been an amazing experience so far! Since graduating from the Academy, I have been exposed to a wide variety of different projects, and have had the opportunity to work across three different accounts. These accounts are fast-paced and publications-focused, and the opportunity to be involved in the conversations surrounding pipeline products has been incredibly interesting. I have also been involved in some digital work, including several video abstracts and planning for virtual congresses.

Euan Paul – Medical Writer
After completing my undergraduate degree at University, I had firmly decided that starting an MSc or PhD wasn’t the route for me. Before trawling the internet for jobs, I identified two things which I wanted from my future career:

1. The option to leave my home city.
2. The opportunity to stay connected to developments in science and medicine.

After months of fruitless searching, a chance meeting with a medical writer led me to investigate MedComms as a possible career option.

I came across the Nucleus Academy whilst applying for entry-level medical communications jobs at various agencies in London. What immediately struck me was the level of investment and resource which had been dedicated to the programme, as well as the blend of classroom training and on-the-job experience the Academy offered. However, what really encouraged me to apply was the fact that you completed the programme in a cohort of around 20 individuals, making it a lot easier to forge strong working relationships and find friends – vital when moving to a new city.

The Academy equipped with me the knowledge and skills required to transition comfortably into my new role, covering everything from best practice for client communications through to guidance on effective writing.  Now, with less than 2 years’ experience in medical communications, I have had the chance to work on a variety of interesting projects and have been entrusted with important responsibilities. I really value the collaborative culture at Nucleus, as well as the ability to manage my workload as I see fit. I am excited to see how far I can progress taking the opportunities available at Nucleus!
