The Power of the Partnership: How Patient-Centricity Improves Care

How can the patient’s voice improve care?

This was the question Medscape Oncology Clinical Strategist Victoria Harvey-Jones, PhD and Lesley Fallowfield DBE, BSC, DPHIL, FMEDSCI, Professor of Pyscho-Oncology, Sussex Health Outcomes Research and Education in Cancer (SHORE-C) sought to answer at this year’s Patient Centricity and Engagement Conference, held recently in Amsterdam. During their presentation, Dr Harvey-Jones and Professor Dame Fallowfield explored how bringing the patient voice to medical education for HCPs, alongside crucial disease- and treatment-centric education, can revolutionize care and lead to improved outcomes for the individual patient.

“We were thrilled to present at the Patient Centricity and Engagement Conference. Improved HCP-patient communication can help patients, as well as their families, throughout the diagnosis and treatment journey, and education plays a key role in helping clinicians be more confident in incorporating patient-centered care. Every patient, or person, living with their disease has an important story to tell and incorporating that story and their perspectives into the larger care picture can have a tremendous impact,” said Dr Harvey-Jones.

The theme of partnership and communication between clinicians and their patients has been a topic of recent discussion among the oncology community, not only at the Patient Centricity and Engagement Conference, but also during a recent ASCO Presidential Address in the United States. Knowing the power of the patient voice in care and patient-centricity, Medscape Oncology has embraced new ways to center the patient in their care and promote improved communication and collaboration.

“Patient-centric education is just one of the pillars of holistic, effective education for HCPs. By integrating patient-centric education alongside pivotal disease-centric and treatment-centric education, clinicians can better treat the individual patient and feel empowered to achieve optimal impact,” commented Dr Harvey-Jones. “And this education model works! Some of our recent education in oncology has potentially impacted over 100,000 patients each month and shown significant improvements in clinicians’ confidence in incorporating the patient perspective into collaborative treatment decision-making and effective communication. And that’s just the beginning of our patient-centric education. There’s so much more to come.”

Dr Harvey-Jones (Medscape Oncology) has also collaborated with Professor Dame Fallowfield (SHORE-C), Steve Clark (a 10-year cancer survivor and founder of Strive for Five and Beyond), and Lorna Warwick (CEO of the Lymphoma Coalition), and launched a white paper examining this topic highlighting the need for integrating the patient voice and effective patient-clinician communication to optimize patient-centered care.
