In recognition of the Anniversary of Stonewall, Nucleus Global brings attention and awareness to persistent health care inequities experienced by LGBTQIA+

This week, in honor of Pride 2022 and the anniversary of Stonewall, Nucleus Global shares some important information about medical care for the LGBTQIA+  community.

On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community stood up, spoke out, and gave birth to Pride!

Nonetheless, health disparities linked with sexual orientation or gender identification continue to be prevalent in both screening and treatment for cancer, mental illness, substance abuse, smoking, and other commonly measured health status indicators.

Healthcare providers and those who support them—including those of us in medical communications—should strive to understand the ongoing challenges these communities face and apply ourselves to better addressing their needs. Here are some examples:

Did You Know? More than half of all self-identified LGBTQIA+ survey respondents have had at least one of these experiences:

  • Refusal of needed medical care
  • Healthcare professionals refusing to touch respondents, or using excessive precautions to minimize interactions
  • Healthcare professionals using harsh or abusive language, or being physically rough or abusive
  • Being blamed by healthcare professionals for their health status

Did You Know? Roughly 1 in 7 older LGBTQIA+ adults were classified as having social cognitive decline (confusion or memory loss) compared with 1 in 10 straight-identifying, cisgender adults.

The RISE study includes a research registry created to help ensure the LGBTQIA+ community is represented in Alzheimer’s research.

Did You Know? The Human Rights Campaign recently published the Healthcare Equality Index 2022, a benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare facilities’ policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQIA+ patients, visitors, and employees.

Did you know? While Stonewall catalysed the wider pride movement, five earlier LGBTQIA+ uprisings occurred between 1955 and 1967 in Maryland, Wisconsin, and California.

At Nucleus Global, we believe everyone should feel free and empowered to be their authentic selves in the workplace, in the community, and especially when seeking medical care. We are proud to be honoring PRIDE 2022!
