As we herald the start of 2019 with the first of the Communiqué Directory’s two issues for the year, in addition to the extreme uncertainty that we are facing concerning all the possible options that Brexit entails, there is also concern about the future of the NHS, which celebrated its 70th birthday in 2018.

The latest figures released by the NHS from October 2018 show a rise in waiting times for patients to see a GP, with some patients waiting more than three weeks for an appointment.

Streamlining the way healthcare professionals (HCPs) work is one way to address this, and the UK’s Ministry for Health and Social Care is on a ‘mission to transform technology in the NHS’ with investments in IT and a new ‘healthtech’ advisory board.

As Louise Dunn writes in the foreword for this issue: “Governments around the world are grappling with escalating costs, increased demand and a shortage of HCPs.” She goes on to ask: “What is the role of the pharmaceutical industry in the digital healthcare revolution?” One answer is digital applications. “Apps, wearable devices and self-diagnosis tools all have the potential to strengthen the patient-physician connection and improve health outcomes, but depending on a poor-quality app could have life-threatening consequences. Can the industry address the multiple issues concerning digital health applications?”
