Open Health, Alex Butler and Carwyn Jones have launched a new UK-based digital venture called The Earthworks.

The digital marketing and communications agency will offer the pharmaceutical industry with a full service digital offering, covering strategic council through to digital production and delivery.

The Earthworks will be run in partnership with Open Health, with Butler and Jones assuming roles as its joint managing directors.

“Alex and Carwyn have unique expertise in the digital arena and I have no doubt that in partnership with Open Health, this new venture will add value to our clients,” explained Open Health CEO, David Rowley.

Butler joins The Earthworks with 13 years marketing and digital communications experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

His roles have included EMEA marketing communications manager for Johnson & Johnson, digital strategy and social media manager for Janssen, and most recently, founder and managing director of digital healthcare communications agency The Social Moon.

Butler said: “We believe that helping our clients build meaningful relationships with customers, patients and the public through the production of top quality digital assets will set us apart from the competition.

“We are both very experienced in the pharmaceutical business and understand our clients needs from an internal and an external perspective”.

Jones was most recently managing director of Channel Health, which has allowed many of the agency’s products to be incorporated into The Earthworks business, including I.Q., email marketing and Medicine Management Connect.

Before this he served as head of pharmaceutical sales and marketing at UK doctors network Doctors.net.uk, where he developed communications programmes, covering promotion, education and conference highlights.

Earlier in his career, Jones held sales, marketing and strategy roles with Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline and Sudler & Hennessey.

Commenting on the venture, he said: “With Alex on board, it is an exciting time to grow the business through strategy and digital production.

“We believe there is a need in the market for a trusted digital partner for the pharmaceutical industry.  We want to fill this gap.”

Joining Butler and Jones on the leadership team will be Marcus Perry as creative director and Ben Wagenaar as technical director.
